Bathroom Truck Operator

This full-time, temporary position works between July 19-31 on the festival site near Salmo, BC.
The Bathroom Truck Operator is responsible for the mechanical pumping and vacuum servicing of portable toilet units across the site. This role manages a Truck Assistant to ensure a high-volume service workflow while maintaining strict adherence to SMF sanitation protocols and safety regulations. This role requires a valid Class 3 Driver’s License (or higher) with air brake endorsement for heavy-duty vacuum truck operation.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Act as the lead for the pump crew, ensuring all assigned personnel perform duties safely and efficiently.
Serve as the primary operator for the septic vacuum system, managing suction, pressure, and tank capacity.
Operate vacuum trucks and pumps safely across the active festival site, including navigating through high-density pedestrian crowds.
Execute full pump runs for all RVs or big bathroom banks, ensuring every unit is serviced promptly.
Adhere strictly to SMF sanitation and wastewater discharge procedures, ensuring all materials are disposed of at authorized locations.
Direct the restocking crew when appropriate to ensure a synchronized cleaning and pumping workflow.
Maintain responsibility for the safety and task management of the Truck Assistant.
Complete all required digital documentation, including pre-trip inspections, pump logs, and safety sign-offs via the safety compliance platform.
Maintain professional radio communication.
Ensure your vehicle is empty of waste, fuelled, re-stocked, and ready for the next shift.
Communicate with the Bathroom and Environment Managers to address high-traffic or problem areas.
Conduct daily safety talks with the crew and attend shift briefings with the Supervisor.
Monitor equipment for technical flaws and identify opportunities to improve route or pumping efficiency.
Promptly report all infrastructure discrepancies, hazards, or equipment malfunctions to the Supervisor.
Ensure accurate time-tracking by signing in/out and submitting completed timesheets on schedule.
Arrive fit for duty and prepared to perform manual labor in all weather conditions.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Valid Class 3 Driver’s License (or higher) with air brake endorsement for heavy-duty vacuum truck operation.
Clean 5-year commercial driving abstract.
Experience operating vacuum trucks, septic pump systems, or heavy commercial vehicles.
WHMIS Certification and proven experience in the safe handling and transport of liquid waste or biohazards.
WorkSafeBC Supervisor Safety Training or equivalent documented leadership experience in a high-risk operational environment.
Documented experience in high-density pedestrian driving, preferably within a festival, parade, or busy construction site.
Must provide and wear CSA-approved steel-toe boots suitable for all scheduled shifts and work conditions.
Attributes & Capabilities:
Must be willing to work all scheduled days and associated varied hours in unfavorable weather, including during showtime.
Willing to undergo SMF Supervisor Training and uphold all responsibilities and standards.
Ability to lift up to 40lbs repetitively.

Take vehicle hand signal direction from the assistant.
Willing and capable of working with human waste and other biologically hazardous materials as part of the role.
Maintain and execute a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism in the scope of work.
Capable of maneuvering a large vehicle through crowds and tight areas.
Ability to communicate and receive guidance from a spotter when necessary.
Lead by example by working steadily, upholding all SMF Policies, treating others with respect, and being responsible for personal actions.
Ability to be flexible and pivot to help other departments in the event of being directed.
Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently.
Communicate all key findings to the Bathroom Manager.
Possesses adequate administrative skills.
Ability to work in a culturally diverse work space without personal judgments or bias.
